antique-perfume-bottle

Good evening friends,  I meant to send this out a few years ago but never got around to it.  An hour before the 2006 World Cup Mountain bike race was to begin Aimee and I took off out into the bush to pick our spots along side the trail to watch and take photo’s.  Along the way while walking on the actual course we found this 100 year old tiny purple perfume bottle laying half buried directly in the middle of one of the trails.  This whole area behind the aquarium used to be a dump but was mostly cleaned years and years ago before the aquarium was built.  The bottle is an inch and three fourth’s tall or around 4.3cm and has a tarnished sterling silver top, it’s really cool.  Back in the States those of you who visited our house know that I collect miniature antique bottle’s although most of those are cobalt blue poison bottles this is a real treasure.  Well today while out hiking with Aimee I found these really cool tiny little flowers.  Both of us tried and tried to shoot them in the wild this morning but with a breeze blowing from the east it made the task completely impossible.  I am a determined soul so I carefully cut one and brought it home knowing that this little bottle would be a perfect holder.  If any of you local folks know the name of these please send it to me, can use all the help I can get.  So from that day on we have named it our “World Cup bottle” and look at it every day as it sits in our bathroom on a display shelf.

Aimee’s parents and sister arrived in 100% great shape without any problems, they said the airports and planes along the way were packed, tiss the season!!  They slept in this morning while Aimee and I did the two and a half hour hike thing looking for little things to shoot.  In the afternoon we all went on a fun/crazy trip to the local grocery store, it was a case of culture shock for sure for these guys trying to figure out what everything said as it’s all written in Dutch.  Aimee also took them to the beach today and they all went snorkeling and from the sounds of it they all had a blast.

Talk to you tomorrow, Sunny regards, Barry

flamingoo-panaramic

flamingoo-panaramic

Hi folks, finally I can send you a shot of a larger group of the flamingo’s that are always over here by our house.  This was shot last summer as you can see by the very dry brush in the background, now this area is solid green as far as the eye can see.  This is about half the flamingo population we usually have in our salt pond at any given time.  But now with all this rain they have taken off to other areas like Bonaire and will return when the salt lake gets a little lower making the brine shrimp fishing a little easier.  I was standing in the salt lake for this photo with my tripod just inching my way closer and closer kind of letting them slowly get used to me.  These flamingos finally said that’s close enough and did take off in a big cloud of orange, I think I have sent some of those to you last year, geez so many pictures I can’t remember any more??

I had a fun day at work in between mega down-pours of rain.  I went on a really fun dive out on the reef with a sea lion!  Yeah how cool is that??  I will send you a picture tomorrow!  Aimee’s parents and sister will be here also tomorrow night going to be a crazy day!

Have to go, dinner is calling, Curacao regards, Barry

Good evening friends,  I thought I would send this as a kind of “teaser” photo as this is the last pane in my Playa Ascension Panoramic.  What is Aimee taking a photo of??  Ahh stay tuned for the rest of this story and the answers are on the way.  Remember yesterday in my blog I mentioned little barrel cacti covered the ground along with jagged limestone??  Well here you can see it, all those red spots are cacti!  Can you find Indi??  Talk about a well hidden little dog but what a trooper!   You can see a little of the bay down below which is Inca’s favorite swimming hole and it’s also a great spot to find driftwood.  Your looking north out over the ocean this is our rough side of the island that very few people get to dive, but can you imagine all the cool stuff just waiting out there??

It was a long day at work, I am beat, see you tomorrow, Barry

Good evening,  We had a really fun Brown family adventure this morning at Playa Ascension on the north west side of the island.  We parked the car up at the top near the main road and hiked down the dirt road towards Ascension bay, it’s about a mile walk.  We found a trail that was really overgrown and headed straight up the side of a mountain on the east side of the road.  I could see from down below that this was where we needed to get to for a panoramic scene of the whole area.  The walking was tough and the mosquitoes were terrible not to mention the trail went straight up the side of this rocky hill??!  The dogs loved it and kept running back and forth to check on their two gasping for breath owners.  I said to Aimee more than once, “geez are we out of shape or is this trail straight up”??  It was a pretty difficult climb, very loose and very steep but the rewards at the top, well your just going to have to wait for the panoramic I shot for you, your gonna love it!  The top was completely covered in tiny little barrel cacti, thorns, and jagged limestone which made the walk to the edge where I needed to be very slow and very dangerous.  We pulled thorn after thorn out of the dogs paws but within 30 minutes we were at the top overlooking the whole Ascension valley , it was breath taking!  We stayed up there for another 30 minutes taking photos and waiting for clouds to pass and finally after we finished we again slowly made our way back to the trailhead and down we went sliding on our butts most of the way.  Once back out on the dirt road we hiked down to the ocean and let the girls go wild, they chased each other and swam till they just plain ran out of gas, that’s how we like them!  It was a fantastic semi cool morning in Curacao, the sun was just glowing on the surrounding hills, ospreys and cara-cara’s flew overhead and the sound of the ocean waves rolling into the bay was nothing short of perfection, it was a fun morning!

We then spent the rest of the day preparing the house and the car for our soon to be arriving guests who fly in Monday evening.  I took this picture at work on Wednesday, this is a brown footed booby.  We have two of these birds at work now they have kind of moved in.   Normally these birds dive for fish in the ocean but these two have figured out that stealing the dolphins fish is either way easier or it’s just plain fun.  These boobies are the most unafraid birds you will ever see, you can walk right up to them and give them a fish or like I did put a camera right in their face!

I smell fresh baked chocolate chip cookies, I am otta here, see you tomorrow, Barry

driftwood-cross

driftwood-cross

Hi friends, we figured since we have had so much fun with our driftwood this year that it was only appropriate to use it as our Christmas card.  This was another very cool piece we found this year like the “scary face” I sent you for Halloween.  This all natural cross was found in the water at Saint Joris on a very weathered five foot tall board, the cross itself is about 12 inches tall.  The funny thing is on the same board at the other end it also has a dolphin face as well, what are the odds, needless to say we will be keeping these little treasures.  It took me 3 days to figure out how to get the lights behind the cross.  I tried everything!  We ended up decorating a 10 foot wooden pole with solid lights.  We then strapped our driftwood cross to a big brick, turned out all the lights at night and prayed for the best, one would think this would be easy but shooting Christmas lights is a real challenge.  Anyways, something different is always good right!!

I want to just say Thanks again to everyone who helped us again this year, you know who you are!!  I am shocked at how fast this year went and really can’t believe it’s almost over??  I am in high hopes of getting to meet some of the great people on my daily e-mail list some day, I know so many of you only through cyber-space!  We hope you all have a great holiday season and a safe new year, lets make 2009 our best year yet!!

Merry Christmas early, we love you all, Barry, Aimee, Inca, Indi and of course “the Cat”!!
